Why We Built Scholar's Edge
We'd both sat on the other side of this industry before we built our own version of it — and we saw the same thing play out over and over. Students sitting in large groups, moving through the same material at the same pace, with tutors stretched too thin to notice when someone was lost. It wasn't bad intent. It was just a model built around volume, not kids.
We kept thinking: this isn't how it should work.
A student who struggles with reading under time pressure doesn't need the same session as a student who's already scoring well but guessing on grammar. They need someone who actually knows them — their patterns, their sticking points, what clicks for them and what doesn't. They need a plan built around them, not around a curriculum calendar.
So we built Scholar's Edge to do it differently. Chase owns math; Mary owns reading, writing, and grammar. And together, they lead students through the college application process from first draft to final submission. We cap our groups at five students — not because we have to, but because that's the number where we can still see every student clearly. We know our students' names, their test histories, and whether they freeze up on word problems or rush through reading passages.
We're not a franchise. We're not scaling to twenty locations. We're two people who built something we actually believe in — and every family we work with gets that version of us, not a watered-down one.
This is what tutoring looks like when it's done right.

If your student has taken a practice test, reviewed the results, and their score isn't moving — that's usually the sign. Self-prep works for some students, but most need someone to help them identify why they're missing questions, not just that they're missing them. That's where strategy makes the difference.
This is one of the most common things we hear — and it makes complete sense. Standardized tests don't measure intelligence or effort. They measure a very specific set of skills and strategies that aren't taught in school. A student who excels in class can still struggle on the SAT or ACT without targeted test prep.
We offer tutoring for the SAT, ACT, PSAT, ASVAB, TSI, and other standardized tests. Our programs are customized to your needs and target areas for improvement.
Earlier is almost always better — but it's never too late to make progress. For most students, 3–6 months before their target test date gives enough time to build real strategy and see meaningful improvement. If your student is closer to test day than that, an intensive approach can still move the needle significantly.
It depends on where your student starts and how much time they put in. Students who commit to a structured, personalized plan consistently see improvements of 100–200+ points on the SAT and 2–5 points on the ACT. The biggest gains come from identifying the specific patterns behind their mistakes — not just doing more practice.
Our process begins with a diagnostic test and an in-depth consultation to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Based on this, we create a personalized study plan tailored to your specific needs, schedule, and learning style.
The number of sessions depends on your starting point, target score, and the amount of preparation time you have. We’ll work with you to create a plan that maximizes your results within your timeline.
Yes! We provide a variety of high-quality resources, including practice tests, question banks, workbooks, and digital tools. All materials are aligned with the content and format of your specific exam.
The PSAT is typically offered in October of 10th and 11th grade. Junior year is the one that counts for National Merit consideration. We recommend using sophomore year as a low-stakes diagnostic and starting prep before junior year if scholarship recognition is a goal.
Not necessarily — but you should pay attention. The score report breaks down exactly where your student is losing points, which makes it one of the most useful planning tools available. Let's look at it together and map out what it means for SAT prep.
Most students benefit from taking it 2–3 times. The first is often a baseline, the second shows real improvement with prep, and a third can fine-tune the score if needed. Colleges generally see all scores, but most use the highest or superscore across test dates.
Superscoring means a college takes the highest Math score and the highest Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score across all test dates — even if they came from different sittings. Most major colleges superscore the SAT, which means strategic retaking can significantly boost your student's competitive score.
There's no universal answer — it genuinely depends on your student's strengths. The SAT tends to favor students who are strong readers and comfortable with data analysis. The ACT moves faster and includes a Science section that rewards students who can process information quickly. We recommend a diagnostic of both before committing to one.
Neither is objectively harder — they're just different. The ACT covers more math content, moves faster, and includes a Science section. Students who struggle with time pressure sometimes find the ACT more challenging. Students who dislike the SAT's reading-heavy format often prefer the ACT. The best way to know is to try both.
Technically, yes — but the reality is more nuanced. More students are submitting scores than ever, even at test-optional schools. When your student doesn't submit, they're giving the admissions office one less piece of information to evaluate them with. Whether to submit should be a strategic decision based on your student's specific score and the schools on their list — not a default.
The TSI (Texas Success Initiative) is a placement test required by Texas public colleges and universities to determine whether incoming students are college-ready in reading, writing, and math. Most students entering a Texas public college need to take it unless they're exempt based on SAT, ACT, or other qualifying scores.
Absolutely! Whether you want to improve your math, reading, writing, or science skills, we can tailor sessions to focus on the areas where you need the most improvement.
Junior year is the ideal time to start building the framework — college list, activities narrative, initial essay brainstorming. Senior year is when it all comes together. Students who start early consistently submit stronger applications because they have time to be thoughtful instead of just getting it done.
A reach is a school where your student's stats fall below the middle 50% of admitted students. A match is where they fall squarely within range. A safety is where they're well above the typical admitted student. A balanced college list has all three — and knowing which is which requires looking at actual admissions data, not just reputation.
Early Action is generally low-risk — you apply early, hear back early, and aren't obligated to attend. Early Decision is binding, which means if accepted, you commit to attending. ED can increase your chances at some schools, but it's only the right move if that school is a clear first choice and the financial aid offer won't be a barrier.
